Mon (crest)　

Upper class aristocrats of medieval Japan put crests on clothes and furnishings
to identify they ownership.

Later, samurai also put crests on their flags to distinguish between enemies and allies on the battlefield.

Due to this historical background, two different kinds of crests, <Kuge> for regular people and <Buka> for samurai, were created.

In the early modern period, the custom of putting crests on clothes became widespread, and crests were even used decoratively.
Even today, the custom of putting a crest on formal wear is still practiced.

A finished crest is very excellent in it's design and is referred to as a "completed beauty." It is said that there are more than 20,000 different crests.
